Charcoal Drawing for Beginners
(An 8-class Syllabus Sample)
Learning the art of drawing and shading. This class is designed for beginner as well as intermediate students. Our focus will mainly be on landscape and still-life images. Students will learn how to more accurately capture value, creating texture with charcoal and even using our eraser as a drawing tool. As the series progresses, we will also learn how to capture any object by interpreting it as basic shapes. A fun yet very informative class. Hope you can join us.
Class 1
Introduction to the supplies
Learning the various ways to hold a charcoal stick and pencil, using the thickness and thinness of lines to achieve a drawing. We will start by doing an automatic drawing for a warm-up. Then working from a photograph, we will draw a simple object.
Class 2
Learning to shade using the cross-hatch method
Photo Reference – a simple still-life composition
Capturing a three-dimensional form using just lines. We will start by doing an automatic drawing for a warm-up. Then working from a photograph, we will draw and shade a simple composition.
Class 3
Introducing blending tools; blending stumps, paper towel
Photo Reference – a slightly more challenging still-life than the last
Again, we will start by doing an automatic drawing for a warm-up. Then working from a photograph, we will draw and shade the image using blending tools to achieve a softer, more realistic finish to our drawing.
Class 4
Using the Paper to our advantage
Photo Reference – A simple image of a house
Capturing texture with charcoal. We will start by doing an automatic drawing for a warm-up. Then working from a photograph, we will draw and shade from our reference. Focus will be placed on using the texture of the paper to our advantage; emphasizing the tooth of the paper in some areas and toning it down in other areas.
Class 5
Understanding the purpose of ‘VALUE’ in our drawing. Learning how to use a value scale.
Photo Reference – A seascape
How the achieve the proper level of light, dark and middle values in our artwork, our warm up time will be shorter as we wish to spend more time on the main drawing.
Class 6
More of Value Study
Photo Reference – A landscape image
Repeating what we have learnt in class 5 using a different image. How the achieve the proper level of light, dark and middle values in our artwork, our warm up time will be shorter as we wish to spend more time on the main drawing.
Class 7
Using the Eraser as a Drawing tool
Photo Reference – A Still-life composition
We will try working in reverse, toning our paper in charcoal then erasing away our light values, and adding more charcoal to get the darker values. We will start by doing an automatic drawing for a warm-up. Then working from the photograph to create our drawing.
Class 8
The training wheels are off
The class will now be given several photographs to choose from (from simple to more complex) Each student will draw the image that they prefer, using any one of or combining various techniques shown in class. I will critique those that wish to share as we draw to the end of the session.
